Year 2, Day # 294 - July 4th in Pinecraft

There is at least one person in Pinecraft that acknowledges publicly our Independence Day. It is not that we in Pinecraft don't appreciate our freedom, but most of us have Anabaptist Heritage. We are the Plain People and we don't go to war even though we love the freedom we have because others went to war.  But we will never make a public statement. I know it doesn't add up and make sense, but this is just the way it is.

Some years ago I was put on the spot when listening in at a debate whether war is right or wrong and was asked my opinion. My reply came on the spur of the moment. I said, "I don't want to live in a country that doesn't have a military." The anti-war side of the debate also wants to live in a country with a military, so the debate died. This is just the way it is among the Plain People.

  1. There ought to be a better answer, but I don't know what it would be either. I am a Quaker attender and have never been able to reconcile this. On the surface (and maybe below), it is having your cake and eating it too. Have you heard a thoughtful point of view?
